(I am Kavitha, and I am studying at Sermathai Vasan College for Women. Ekta has taken sessions for seven days. Earlier, I used to hesitate to talk about Menstruation. But they made us talk about that this a lot and now I am not shy to talk about it)
- these are the words from the participant of our 7-day life skill sessions which widely touch upon the topics such as tools of communication, mensuration health, HIV&AIDS, cancer awareness, the prevalence of violence against women, gender perspectives…
The objective of the seven-day camp is to impart knowledge and spread awareness on various aspects mentioned above; strive to achieve attitudinal change; improve their conflict resolution; develop an understanding of gender equality; harness their communication skills. The seven days session covered the following
- What is communication? How can we communicate effectively and sharply? the role of body language in communication – how important it is?
- The aspects of one’s strengths and weaknesses; how to improve the weakness and make it one’s own strength; steps to increase the self-confidence to nullify one’s weakness.
- Importance of sexual and reproductive health, menstrual hygiene, PCO, PCOD, and its consequences; cycles of mensuration.
- Information about types of cancer, breast cancer, how to diagnose these; risk factors that cause the disease.
- Differences of gender and sex; gender perspectives; gender roles and how these matter to the everyday sexism and patriarchal values in the society.
- What is real beauty? What is commercial beauty? How inner beauty adds strength to one’s own personality?
- How does gender violence matter in our lives? Consequences of gender violence; the role of everyone to combat gender violence in our lives; the support system for redressal.
All the sessions were lively and completely enjoyed by the students as they were completely activity based. It was very effective when the information was provided to the students through the games. We could not register any absentees in our sessions; they were present all seven days. When we heard a participant saying “AIDSஆல யாரு பாதிக்கப்பட்டாலும், பாலியல் ரீதியான நடவடிக்கை வச்சிக்கிட்டதால், அவங்களுக்கு இருக்குன்னு ஒதுக்கப்பட கூடாதுன்னு புரிஞ்சிக்கிட்டேன்” (A person with AIDS could not be discriminated as if it was spread to the person because of his/her sexual activities), we were happy that our efforts have been reaching them properly. And also our spirits were elevated when another participant mentioned, “நாங்க எல்லோரும் இவ்வளவு நாளா appearance வச்சு தான் judge பண்ணியிருக்கோம். ஆனால் அது தப்புன்னு புரிஞ்சிக்கிட்டோம்” (so far we used judge anyone out of their appearance but we realized now, it is wrong)
The seven days were fun-filled and learning-packed for the students but for us they were SATISFACTION-FILLED.
